We are thrilled to be launching our walking campaign for the second year! Our 2021 goals are to register 1000 new walkers and collectively reach Two Billion Steps as a community. Last year, over 2000 participants signed up and logged steps even during the COVID-19 pandemic and successfully reached the year one goal of One Billion Steps! But more importantly, it connected us as a community when people were socially distanced and kept our citizens healthy. And now, Children WIN has committed to keeping the momentum going!

This year, to be successful and reach our goals, Step It Up Erie County needs strong corporate support. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to support Children’s WIN, our Childhood Obesity Initiative. Sponsors of the campaign will be included in all marketing materials, but more importantly, be a significant force in helping Children WIN combat childhood obesity in our community. We want to make the healthy choice the easy choice by getting kids and families walking so we can meet our fundraising and participation goals for this year!

As a sponsor, you would be helping Children WIN continue many of its current initiatives and fund additional needs that have surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic. These programs include:

  • Opening a childhood obesity treatment clinic for our region.
  • Conducting a research project in a low-income community to see how socio-economic status affects healthy living.
  • Implementing the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, a program from Cornell University School of Applied Economics and Management, to encourage students to make better choices while in the school lunch line.
  • Helping daycare centers and preschools implement policies and practices that lead to healthier habits for the children they serve.
  • Promoting walking and activity as becoming a part of the culture of Cabarrus County by initiating a community-wide walking campaign (Step It Up Erie County).
  • Launching the 5210 Healthy Together program (5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of daily physical activity, and 0 sugary beverages) in all Cabarrus County Schools and Kannapolis City Schools by 2025.
  • Supporting alternative programs to keep children active while schools and camps were closed during the pandemic. The NIH (National Institute of Health) has stated the more active someone is the less vulnerable they are to COVID-19.
  • Supporting local hunger programs like No Kids Hungry. With schools out and unemployment rates up during the pandemic, many families rely on assistance to provide healthy and stable meals for children.
